Watercolors and Charcoal

Artist Statement

Rather than knowing to much beforehand and having everything carefully mapped out and planned, it is the unpredictablity of watercolors that intriques me most. Like the braided river, the painting seems to take its' own course along the way and the challenge is responding to the changes as they happen.

The paradox is bridging the gap between spontaneous expression and the craft of careful decision maiking.

The artist's concept is more important than technique and principles of design. I tend to be more concerned with atmosphere and quality of light than the details.

At the top of the long list of artist I most admire are Whistler, Monet, Turner and Inness, mostly known as Tonalist.

Some of my favorite quotes:

JMW " as music is the poetry of sound, so is painting the poetry of sight and the subject matter has nothing to do with harmony of sound or color.

T.S. Elliot "and at the end of all our exploring will be to arrive where we started and know the place for the first time."
